Cultural Context and Challenges
Senegal is 95% Muslim in professed religion. Islam in Senegal is comprised of several ‘brotherhoods,’ each with its own spiritual leader. There is some competition among the brotherhoods, and this impacts evangelistic efforts. The country is experiencing increasingly the presence of radical Islam in the country, seeking to gain converts.
Being a Christian in Senegal poses challenges: family opposition; finding a job in the community; social rejection by the local community. The common practice of polygamy discourages many people from becoming Christian and obviously impacts the fellowship of believers within the local church. Illiteracy is a major obstacle to Christian growth in maturity.
EPS Vision
- Plant more reformed and covenantal churches among the Serer.
- Work through cultural bridges between the Serer and the Fulan (Pulaar) peoples to develop church planting movements in the Fulani, Muslim people group that is spread throughout West Africa.
- Train church planters and pastors for new church plants
- Provide converts with vocational skills as a means to economic survival
- Equip the churches with evangelistic/missions vision and programs

Five Year Goals of the National Church
Theological and Missiological Training
Estimated Cost: $27,750/year for the next five years (2008-2012)
Goal: To provide biblical and theological training to EPS pastors and
church planters; validate with certificate, B.A., or M.A. degree. We will
look for each leader to help train another man to be a leader each year.
We want to train 100 leaders through WATI in the next 5 years.
Church Planting and Evangelism
Estimated Cost: $5,750/year for the next five years
Goal: Ordain 10 pastors and church planters
Goal: Plant 50 new churches
Goal: Establish two presbyteries
Church Planter Support
Estimated Cost: $38,400/year
Goal: One of the greatest challenges facing new churches is that of
providing financially for the church planter and subsequent pastor.
Many church plants do not develop into real churches for failure to
provide a basic income for church planters and/or pastors. Transitional
support will aid in developing well-organized congregations capable of
gaining financial stability and self-support status.
Ministerial Expenses
Estimated Cost: $10,500/year
Goal: Cover office expenses, e.g., rent, office supplies, equipment,
bank charges, telephone and other utilities, travel, meetings.
